3 get
❢ This much-used verb has no multi-purpose equivalent in French and therefore is very often translated by choosing a synonym: to get lunch = to prepare lunch = préparer le déjeuner. get is used in many idiomatic expressions ( to get something off one's chest etc) and translations will be found in the appropriate entry (chest etc). This is also true of offensive comments ( get stuffed etc) where the appropriate entry would be stuff. Remember that when get is used to express the idea that a job is done not by you but by somebody else ( to get a room painted etc) faire is used in French followed by an infinitive ( faire repeindre une pièce etc). When get has the meaning of become and is followed by an adjective (to get rich/drunk etc) devenir is sometimes useful but check the appropriate entry (rich, drunk etc) as a single verb often suffices ( s'enrichir, s'enivrer etc). For examples and further uses of get see the entry below.1 ( receive) recevoir [letter, school report, grant] ; recevoir, percevoir [salary, pension] ; TV, Radio capter [channel, programme] ; did you get much for it? est-ce que tu en as tiré beaucoup d'argent? ; what did you get for your car? combien as-tu revendu ta voiture? ; we get a lot of rain il pleut beaucoup ici ; our garden gets a lot of sun notre jardin est bien ensoleillé ; we get a lot of tourists nous avons beaucoup de touristes ; you get lots of attachments with this cleaner il y a beaucoup d'accessoires fournis avec cet aspirateur ; you get what you pay for il faut y mettre le prix ; he's getting help with his science il se fait aider en sciences ;2 ( inherit) to get sth from sb lit hériter qch de qn [article, money] ; fig tenir qch de qn [trait, feature] ;3 ( obtain) ( by applying) obtenir [permission, divorce, custody, licence] ; trouver [job] ; ( by contacting) trouver [plumber, accountant] ; appeler [taxi] ; ( by buying) acheter [food item, clothing] (from chez) ; avoir [theatre seat, ticket] ; to get something for nothing/at a discount avoir qch gratuitement/avec une réduction ; to get sb sth, to get sth for sb ( by buying) acheter qch à qn ; I'll get sth to eat at the airport je mangerai qch à l'aéroport ;4 ( subscribe to) acheter [newspaper] ;5 ( acquire) se faire [reputation] ; he got his money in oil il s'est fait de l'argent dans le pétrole ;6 ( achieve) obtenir [grade, mark, answer] ; he got it right ( of calculation) il a obtenu le bon résultat ; ( of answer) il a répondu juste ; how many do I need to get? 9 πιέζω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to press, to push, beset' (Il.).Other forms: - έω (Hom. as v.l.; Hp., Herod., Plb.), aor. πιέσαι (IA.), pass. πιεσθῆναι (θ 336), also πι-έξαι, - εχθῆναι (Hp., Epidaur.); fut. πιέσω, perf. midd. πεπίεσμαι (Arist.; - ίεγμαι Hp.), act. πεπίεκα; besides πιάζω (Alcm., Alc., hell.). πιάσαι (- άξαι Theoc.), πιασθῆναι, πεπίασμαι (hell.), rarely w. ἐπ-, ἀπο- a.o.Derivatives: 1. πίε-(πία-)σις ( συν-, ἀπο-πιέζω) f. `pressing, pressure' (Pl., Arist.); 2. - σμός ( ἐκ-, συν- πιέζω a.o.) m. `id.' (Hp., Arist.); 3. - σμα ( ἀπο-, ἐκ- πιέζω a.o.) n. `pressure, pressed mass' (Hp., Eub.); 4. - στήρ m. `presser, press' (Att. inscr., medic.) with - στήριος `pressing', n. `press' (Dsc.); 5. - στρον n. `id.' (Hp., Gal.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: On πιεζ-έω as innovation beside older πιέζ-ω cf. κυρ-έω beside κύρ-ω a.o. (Schwyzer 721). Also πιάζω is an innovation (after the verbs in - άζω; perh. also phonet. explainable; s. Schwyzer 244 w. lit., a.o. Wackernagel IF 25, 336f. = Kl. Schr. 2, 1032 f.). -- Not certainly interpreted. Great semantic and phonetic similarity shows Skt. pīḍáyati `squeeze, press, hurt', which stands first for * pizd- and would give Gr. *πίζω. For it πιέζω after ἕζω (Schwyzer 721 n. 5)? Diff., very hard, Kuiper Acta Or. 12, 227f.: πιέζω from *pii̯es-dō as full grade of * pis-d- in Skt. pīḍ-. Further combinations hypothetic: * piz-d- from * pis-d- as d-enlargement of IE * pis- in Lat. pīnsō `pound, crush' (Fick, Curtius a. A.; cf. πτίσσω). -- Earlier (Brugmann, Osthoff etc.; s. Bq s.v. and WP. 2, 486 [Pok. 887]) from *(e)pi-sed-i̯ō resp. *( e)pi-zd- (\> pīḍáyati) prop. *"sit upon" = `squeeze' explained; against this Kuiper l.c. and Mayrhofer s.v. w. rich lit. and many details.Page in Frisk: 2,533-534Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πιέζω

14 σπεύδω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to hurry, to hasten, to strive, to exert oneself', trans. `to drive, to quicken, to ply, to aspire after'.Other forms: Aor. σπεῦσαι, fut. σπεύσομαι (Il.), σπεύσω (E. a.o.), σπευσίω (Cret.), perf. ἔσπευκα (hell.), rare midd. σπεύ-δομαι (A.), pass. ἔσπευσμαι (late),Compounds: Also w. prefix, e.g. ἐπι-, κατα-, συ-. Compp., e.g. κενό-σπουδ-ος `seriously prosecuting frivolities' with - έω, - ία (hell.). -- 2. κατάσπευ-σις (: κατα-σπεύδω) f. `hurry' (Thd.; σπεῦσις Gloss.), σπευσ-τός (Phryn.), - τικός ( ἐπι-) `hurried' (Arist., Eust.).Derivatives: 1. σπουδ-ή f. `haste, zeal, labour, seriousness, good will' (Il.), with - αῐος `zealous, striving, serious, good' (IA) with - αιότης f. (Pl. Def., LXX a. o.), -ᾱξ ἀλετρίβανος H. (cf. below); - άζω ( ἐπι-, κατα-, συ- a. o.) `to be quick, to carry on seriously, etc.' (IA) with - ασμα, - ασμάτιον, - ασμός, - αστής, - αστός, - αστικός.Etymology: Through the maintenance of the ου-diphthong σπουδή proves to be an old derivation (cf. Schwyzer 347); the primary σπεύδω on the opposite has resisted any vowelchange. -- Good formal and semantic agreement shows Lith. spáusti (\< *spáud-ti), with pres. spáudžiu `press, squeeze', also `push, drive on', intr. `hutty'. A trace of the meaning `push' has also been supposed in σπούδαξ = ἀλετρίβανος, `pestle of a mortar' (*"oppressor"; Fick BB 29, 197). The inf. spáus-ti can be equated with σπεύδ-ω, but the pres. spáudžiu can as well be an old iterative IE *spoudéiō. With σπουδή agrees formally spaudà f. `pressure, literature'. Beside it with ū-vowel spūdà f. `throng, urgency, pressure' and spūdė́ti `be oppressed, thrust down, pain oneself, meddle'. With zero grade also Alb. punë `work, business', if from * spud-nā. Arm. p'oyt`, gen. p'ut`oy (o-stem) `zeal' however gives problems both in the an- and auslaut; cf. Lidén GHÅ 39 [1933]: 2, 49; also Hiersche Ten. aspiratae 237. -- Hypothetic further combinations with rich lit. in WP. 2, 659, Pok. 998 f. (esp. Szemerényi ZDMG 101, 205ff.) and Fraenkel s. spaudà; older lit. also in Bq.Page in Frisk: 2,765Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σπεύδω
